Most agencies require you to pay for your headshots, composite cards, zed cards, head books, and photo shoots. Some huge agencies in the top 5 markets in the world may possibly loan money to very promising newcomers but rest assured they will collect and often with profit with interest.

Sometimes the huge Agencies in the biggest cities will line up test shoots for you but if it is a really good photographer they will charge you $100-$400 just for the shoot. The best usually do not work for free. Some new photographers will do free tests but it is usually a waist of your time if you want to use them as a professional marketing tool against top notch competition. Test shoots should usually be used to gain more experience and add to your portfolio if they are good.

To the people that make a successful day to day living in the professional Modeling and Acting industry it is treated as a business. Agencies that have an enduring successful track record do not pay for upfront fees for new talent because there is no guarantee the model or actor will be profitable or that the model or actor will even follow through. They do not know for sure if the talent has all the various attributes it takes to be profitable example, (are they photogenic, intelligent, persistent, punctual, loyal, engaging and willing to accept rejection).

If you don’t have or do not want to invest the required capital it is almost impossible to become a professional model or actor. Most agencies will not be in business long if the agency fronts hundreds even thousands of dollars to each talent. Often the talent either decides not to pursue the business after a few try’s or does not work hard at being a great talent because they have nothing to lose. Some talent after getting their photos and portfolio paid for, then decide to jump to a competing agency. It is too risky for an agency to gamble like that.

Modeling and Acting is more than just taking photos and a few classes, you have to learn the “business” of this industry. You can’t call yourself a model or actor without knowing the business and doing the “real” work, which encompasses knowing how to book a paying job.

Being a smart talent though can make the process much easier and economical. When you sign with an agent make sure you do not pay a fee for them to promote you. You should only pay them a commission when you book a paying job. Do not pay exorbitant fees for photos, cards, portfolios etc. Do not pay exorbitant fees for training. Make sure the agency has a proven history of successfully booking jobs, realize it is a tough business and if an agency makes big promises they are usually after something (many times it is your money).

The talent industry has many honest, upstanding agents, models and actors but like with everything else in life there are a few people that take advantage of inexperienced people. Have a fun rewarding experience but be smart!

Most Agencies will require that you take extremely expensive classes with them before they decide to promote you. Craze does not follow this practice. You do need to have talent or excellent potential though.

Instead of working on the things you can control many actors and models play the blame game.
Example: That Casting Director just doesn’t really like me or, that person is just racist/sexist/ageist and unwilling take a risk, or all the clients want are tall, skinny models etc.
It’s natural that we sometimes make false assumptions; it protects us when we feel weak and unable to change, whether because of financial conditions or lack of motivation.

Over the years it seems the really successful talent will take a hard look at themselves first and try not to play the blame game very often.

So have some courage and look at some of the things you can change!

Here’s how to be pro-active.

Reel- Commercials, Feature Films, Student Films, Independent Films, Webisodes, Runway shows. Get a get reel of your work made with a professional reel company. Get it reviewed by your agent and get it published.

Pictures-Have your agent advise you to keep the ones you have or to get more accurate updated or flattering pictures.
Resume-Keep it updated and give it to your agent.
Coaches– Do you need referrals to acting coaches? Ask your Talent Agent, Manager and friendly Casting Directors. How often are you practicing? Your competition is probably daily.
Casting Director Workshops-You get one-on-one time with a casting director who can tell you straight whether you’re terrific or need work. You will learn their particular style that they prefer when casting talent.

Test Shoots-Build your portfolio with professional test shoots from reputable photographers. Have your agent assist you in putting together your portfolio.

When we do send mass email alerts, we do not have time to segregate them based on sex and location, they just go out to everyone in that age range. If you see an email that does not fit you personally, just disregard it.

Again, it is important that you check your email and the Blog regularly. Only certain projects are emailed to you, whereas every opportunity that is currently available is posted on our Blog site if you do not know the sites address call your agent. Also, some email accounts might spam or junk certain mass email alerts from Craze depending on their contents. If you are checking the blog, you are seeing everything!

Sometimes we submit your head shots and resumes if you fit a client’s needs to try to induce the clients in showing interest in you. This is usually done if we have worked a lot with the client, or are trying to get a new client. We also use this tactic when a job has more flexibility on dates, rates, locations etc. This is called a direct booking and we often do not even post these. Many times we have submitted you and will only contact you if they are showing interest.

If you submit for a project and are not picked please do not get discouraged! Your time will come when you are right for the job so be persistent.  Most people fail in this business because they are either not properly skilled or they want things to happen to quickly and get discouraged and quit before their big opportunity comes.

We know that sometimes it is hard when you are not contacted when not picked for a particular project, but we must use our time wisely. Often the client does not give us a time line or notice when they will be choosing the talent. We want you to succeed and are doing everything we can to assist.
